Physical Description
The Wollemi pine is a coniferous tree that can reach up to 130 feet (40 meters) in height. It has dark green, triangular leaves arranged in clusters and produces brown, woody cones. Its bark is notable for its distinctive, bubbly texture, which helps the tree retain moisture.
Environmental Concerns
The Wollemi pine is critically endangered with a very limited natural distribution, known only from a few sites in the Wollemi National Park in Australia. Threats include habitat destruction due to logging and development, as well as potential climate change impacts.
Other Information
Discovered in 1994, this tree is often referred to as a “living fossil” because it is a remnant of ancient flora. Efforts to protect its habitat and cultivate the tree in botanical gardens are ongoing to prevent its extinction.
