Physical Description
The Hawaiian Sandalwood is a small to medium-sized tree, typically growing up to 50 feet (15 meters) tall. It has leathery, green leaves and produces small, fragrant, reddish-pink flowers. The tree is known for its fragrant heartwood, which is highly prized.
Environmental Concerns
Over-harvesting for its valuable wood in the 19th century drastically reduced its population. Today, habitat loss due to agriculture, urbanization, and invasive species continues to threaten the remaining stands of Hawaiian Sandalwood.
Other Information
Hawaiian Sandalwood was once a significant part of Hawaii’s ecosystem and economy. Conservation efforts focus on reforestation and preventing further habitat destruction.
