Prickly Pear Cactus

Phonetic Spelling: 

oh-PUN-tee-uh bah-SIL-uh-ris

Description: 

Has both long and short spikes. Also characterized by its red to purple fruit, often referred to as the “tuna.” Has both edible and medicinal purposes. Both the fruit and the pads of the cactus are edible; however, it is best to eat at a controlled amount. Possible side effects include slight diarrhea, nausea, etc. The “tuna” can reach lengths of 2-3 inches.

Distribution/Location: 

Native to the Americas and grows in desert regions. Can be seen around the world.

Environmental Concerns: 

The Cactus Moth damages the Prickly Pear Cactus by eating its inner tissues, reducing its life expectancy.
