Acer saccharum (Sugar Maple)

Physical Description

The Sugar Maple is a large deciduous tree that can grow up to 75-100 feet tall with a spread of 50-70 feet. It has a dense, rounded crown with five-lobed leaves that turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall. The bark is gray and becomes deeply furrowed with age.

Environmental Concerns

Sugar Maples are sensitive to changes in soil composition and climate. Acid rain, soil compaction, and climate change can negatively impact their growth. The species is also susceptible to pests like the Asian long-horned beetle.

Other Information

Sugar Maples are primarily known for their sap, which is boiled down to produce maple syrup. They also provide high-quality wood used for furniture, flooring, and musical instruments.
