Physical Description
The Bigleaf Mahogany is a large, tropical hardwood tree that can grow up to 150 feet (45 meters) tall. It has large, compound leaves and produces small, fragrant, white to yellowish flowers. The tree’s wood is highly valued for its rich, reddish-brown color and durability.
Environmental Concerns
The Bigleaf Mahogany is endangered due to over-exploitation for its valuable timber. Illegal logging, habitat destruction, and deforestation in the Amazon rainforest and other parts of Central and South America have significantly reduced its population.
Other Information
The Bigleaf Mahogany is listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to control its trade and promote sustainable forestry practices. Efforts are underway to protect remaining populations and restore degraded habitats.
