Bois Dentelle (Elaeocarpus bojeri)

Physical Description

Bois Dentelle is a small, flowering tree endemic to the cloud forests of Mauritius. It grows up to 10 meters (33 feet) tall, with a slender trunk and smooth, gray bark. The tree is known for its delicate, lace-like white flowers that hang in clusters from the branches. The leaves are dark green, glossy, and oval-shaped.

Environmental Concerns

Bois Dentelle is critically endangered, with only two known individuals surviving in the wild. Habitat loss, invasive species, and limited natural regeneration are the primary threats to its survival.

Other Information

Conservation efforts include habitat restoration, propagation, and reintroduction programs. The tree is also being cultivated in botanical gardens to preserve its genetic material and support reintroduction efforts in Mauritius.
