Physical Description
The Chilean Wine Palm is one of the tallest palm species, growing up to 80 feet (24 meters) in height with a thick, smooth trunk and a crown of long, arching, feather-like leaves. The tree produces large clusters of small, yellowish flowers followed by round, yellow fruits.
Environmental Concerns
This palm is endangered due to habitat loss from agriculture, urbanization, and over-harvesting for its sap, which is used to produce a traditional Chilean drink. Climate change also threatens its natural habitat in central Chile.
Other Information
The Chilean Wine Palm is one of the slowest-growing palms and can live for hundreds of years. Conservation efforts include protecting its natural habitats and regulating the harvesting of its sap.
