Description:
Pentachaeta lyonii is a small annual herb in the sunflower family (Asteraceae) that typically grows to about 10 to 30 centimeters tall. The leaves are linear to narrowly lanceolate and may have a few teeth or be entirely smooth. Its most distinct feature are the bright yellow, daisy-like flower heads that are around 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. Each flower head consists of numerous yellow ray florets surrounding a central cluster of yellow disc florets.
Distribution/Location:
Southern California, particularly within Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It is primarily found in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Environmental Concerns:
Pentachaeta lyonii is listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The primary threats to its survival include habitat destruction due to urban development, invasive species, and habitat fragmentation.
